Filmmakers from Sahel document life during times of coronavirus
In a mini-series of five corona-films from the Sahel (Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger in West Africa) you glimpse into the local realities and the challenges that citizens are facing due to the imposed regulations and restrictions.
“Our society is deeply rooted in living together, it’s not about to change anytime soon, despite the evil!”, says Ousmane Samassékou; film director from Mali.
In his film, The World Around Me, Samassékou looks at the problem of fake news in Mali where a large part of the population doesn’t believe that the coronavirus exists.
Samassékou’s film is part of a mini-series of five corona-films from the Sahel (Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger in West Africa) in which you glimpse into the local realities and the challenges that citizens are facing due to the imposed regulations and restrictions.
How shall we eat, how shall we live together, will we die from this? These are some of the questions asked by filmmakers from the Sahel. A severe challenge in the Sahel region is that a large part of the population does not believe that the virus exists.
The five films are all part of the “Living in Times of Coronavirus” project started by IMS to give the crisis a human connection and allow local filmmakers to document the new realities that we all experience.
So far, more than 30 films have been created across the world. You can find all the films here
