Update: Syrian journalist Rami Jarrah released from detention in Turkey


UPDATE: Rami Jarrah was released from detention on 20 February 2016.


Rami Jarrah, a Syrian journalist based in Turkey was held by the Turkish authorities from Tuesday 16 February until his release 20 February 2016.

Jarrah was detained by immigration officials after trying to apply for a residency permit in the city of Gaziantep close to Turkey’s border with Syria, say reports. The reasons for his detention are still unclear, but is reported that Jarrah was questioned about his professional work as a journalist.

Jarrah’s journalistic work includes reporting for international outlets including CNN, Al Jazeera, and NPR. He fled Syria with his wife and child in 2011.

After leaving Syria, he co-founded the independent citizen journalist group ANA Press which provides footage and reports to international outlets including the New York Times, Huffington Post, and others.

Jarrah is one of the few journalists who despite the risks, continues to travel to his home country to report on the conflict and its effect on ordinary people.
