2024 Annual Ethiopia Safety of Journalists Assessment Report

This report comprehensively analyses the risks journalists and media workers face and highlights rising threats to media safety and freedom in Ethiopia.

Conducted by an independent consultant using localised and standardised monitoring tools, the report documents alarming trends, including legal persecution, physical assaults, digital threats and gender-based violence, while offering evidence-based recommendations to safeguard media freedom and the safety of journalists in Ethiopia. Among others, the report provides:

IMS is working with partners to promote journalist safety through preventive and holistic measures such as:

– Comprehensive training programs in risk mitigation, digital security and trauma awareness.
– Coalition building and collaboration among media, regulatory bodies and duty-bearers.
– Launching the Consortium for the Safety of Journalists (CSoJ) to coordinate and institutionalise protection.
– Advocating for reforms through the Media Sector Actors Action Plan, which demands:
– Standardised threat monitoring tools.
– Emergency mechanisms for at-risk journalists.
– Evidence-based data and advocacy.
– Accountability for attacks.
