Syria’s 2014 violations against journalists

2014: A year in violations against Syria’s journalists

The conflict in Syria continues to claim the lives of journalists. Many of those who are not killed by government forces or Islamic State are injured or kidnapped. According to data from the Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR), a total of 17 journalists were killed, 43 were kidnapped or arrested, and 15 were injured in 2014. The main perpetrator of violations against journalists was government forces, at nearly 40 per cent. The chart on the right shows violations in 2014 broking down by perpetrator as reported by SNHR.

The map below also uses data from the Syrian Network for Human Rights. Each circle represents either a killing (red), an injury (yellow) or a kidnapping (orange). The map calendar can be paused at any point.
