Tri-City Photo Marathon 2018
A photo marathon is not about running. Rather, it is a race against time and testing your own creative limits.
At Tri-City Photo Marathon 2018 each participant must within a span of 10 hours use his/her camera or smartphone to visually interpret 10 themes. This is a Tri-City Photo Marathon because it takes place in three cities at the same time: Cairo, Copenhagen and Ramallah.
In Copenhagen, the event is organised by International Media Support (IMS).
Tri-City Photo Marathon 2018 takes place on Saturday 21 April from 10:00-20:00. We meet at IMS’ headquarters, Nørregade 18, 1165 Copenhagen K – this is where the participants are given the themes and start the marathon.
The Tri-City Photo Marathon is an inclusive photography competition open to all participants no matter their age or experience. All that is required is an interest in visual storytelling and street photography – and a digital camera or smartphone, of course.
Participation is free, but registration is necessary. Sign up for the CPH edition at the following link, where you can also find the rules and regulations (also available for download below): www.fotomarathon.dk/tilmeld_2018/
A local jury in each of the three cities Cairo, Copenhagen and Ramallah will select the winning series based on innovative ideas and creativity. There will be prizes for the best three series in each city.
Winners will be announced in early May 2018, and the best pictures from all three cities will be included in a common exhibition.
Behind the Photo Marathon
The concept behind the photo marathon is almost 30 years old. Originally a Danish idea, it has since the first edition in Copenhagen in 1989 spread globally, but never before has a photo marathon been held simultaneously in three cities.
As a novel cross-cultural collaborative photography competition, the Tri-City Photo Marathon aims to foster community building and connect the cities of Ramallah, Copenhagen and Cairo through the medium of photography. It is an attempt to photographically document how people across borders and cultures interpret the same themes and how the local environments affect the interpretation of the participating photographers. Furthermore, the Photo Marathon provides an opportunity for amateurs and professionals to engage creatively with the medium of photography and increase network opportunities between photography enthusiasts from the three countries.
The event is organised by International Media Support in Denmark, the Danish House in Palestine (DHIP) in Ramallah and the Danish Egyptian Dialogue Institute (DEDI) in Cairo in collaboration with the Contemporary Image Collective (Cairo) and FotoMarathon Denmark.
